    Uninterruptible Power Supplies

An uninterruptible power supply, commonly known as a UPS Power Supply, is designed to provide power to your computers, servers, server rooms and data centers in case of main energy failure, electrical surge or unexpected energy cut-off.

These devices contain a battery that ensures power to your computer system for a specific period, allowing enough time to close software, save current tasks, and properly shut down the computer.

RS offers a comprehensive range of reliable and certified UPS systems from leading brands, ensuring that you can find the perfect solution for your needs. Our range includes models suited for everything from home offices to industrial applications, offering robust protection against power issues.

    Types of UPS Systems

There are several types of UPS system solutions available:

    • Online UPS - An Online UPS supplies power by converting AC input (utility power) to DC and reconverting it back to stable AC through an inverter. This process is continuous, and the system constantly charges the batteries, ensuring a smooth, uninterrupted supply of power. The primary advantage of an online UPS is that it provides power without any momentary interruptions during a power outage. This makes it ideal for sensitive equipment that cannot tolerate even brief power disruptions, such as servers, data centers, medical equipment, and critical IT infrastructure.
    • Standby UPS - A Standby UPS system operates by supplying AC input (utility power) directly to connected devices under normal conditions. However, when a power outage or abnormal voltage is detected, the inverter quickly switches on to provide power from the batteries. There is a brief momentary break in AC output during the switch-over, usually lasting a few milliseconds. This type of UPS is more suitable for smaller, less critical applications where brief interruptions in power are acceptable. It is commonly used for home offices, personal computers, networking equipment, and small-scale IT setups.
    • Parallel processing UPS - A Parallel Processing UPS combines the benefits of both online and traditional inverter systems. While it draws power from AC input (utility power), a bidirectional inverter connected in parallel works to correct voltage and absorb electrical noise. This system offers high efficiency and reliability by maintaining continuous power correction and ensuring that devices connected to the UPS are supplied with clean, stable electricity. These features make it suitable for medium-to-large-scale operations that need to handle high loads while maintaining system stability.
    • Hybrid UPS - The Hybrid UPS system consists of three operational modes: double conversion mode, economy mode, and active filter mode. The UPS automatically switches between these modes based on the power conditions and load requirements. The Hybrid UPS is designed for situations where the power environment varies, and the system must adapt in real-time, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability without any momentary breaks in the output voltage.

Choosing the Right UPS: Sizing and Specifications

A UPS power supply may vary in the backup time, size, numbers and type of communication ports. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a UPS:

    • Power Requirements (VA/Watt): The first step is to determine the power requirements of your devices. Ensure that the UPS capacity is sufficient to handle the total load. It's recommended to choose a UPS with at least 20-25% more capacity than the total wattage of the connected devices to accommodate any unexpected surges. For instance, if your devices require 500W, look for a UPS with a capacity of around 600VA or higher to ensure optimal performance.
    • Number of Devices: Next, consider how many devices you'll need to connect to the UPS. A UPS with more outlets and a higher power capacity will be necessary for setups with multiple devices. Additionally, check for UPS models that offer both battery backup and surge protection outlets, as this will help ensure that your devices are fully protected during fluctuations in power supply. For instance, if you connect a desktop computer, a router, and a printer, a UPS with 3 battery backup outlets and 3 surge protection outlets will be sufficient to protect all devices from power surges and interruptions.
    • Runtime Needs: The runtime, or how long the UPS can provide power during an outage, is another critical consideration. Calculate the runtime based on the total load and battery capacity of the UPS. It’s essential to choose a UPS that offers enough time to safely shut down systems or continue operations until an alternative power source is available. For example, if you need a UPS for small offices or home setups that need enough time for safe shutdown, a UPS providing 15-20 minutes of runtime at full load can be considered ideal.
    • Additional Features: Modern UPS systems come with a variety of extra features that enhance functionality. For instance, features like LCD displays allow users to monitor real-time power status, load levels, and battery health. Connectivity options such as USB connector or network ports enable remote monitoring and alerts, which are especially useful in larger or critical environments where continuous uptime is vital. Consider these features based on your needs for monitoring, ease of use, and advanced control.
