What is Ingress Protection?

An IP rating classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact and water in electrical enclosures and junction boxes. The first number indicates the protection from solids and the second number is the protection from liquids.
