According to Australian law, wiring or changing a light switch requires hiring a licensed electrical contractor for any 240V mains power work, including installations and replacements. This regulation is in place to ensure electrical safety and compliance with AS/NZS 3000 standards.
To wire or change a light switch, begin by turning off the mains power. Then, access the switch's wiring, where you’ll typically find three electric wiring colours — brown (live), blue (neutral), and green/yellow (earth).
The brown wire, carrying the electrical current, is connected to the 'L' terminal of the switch. The blue wire, completing the circuit, goes to the 'N' terminal, and the green/yellow wire, the safety earth, is attached to the grounding symbol.
These connections must be secure and accurate for the switch to function safely. After wiring, the electrician reassembles the switch, reattaches the faceplate, and restores the power to test the new switch.
