What are the uses of a piano hinge?
Piano hinges, or continuous hinges, have a great many day-to-day uses in countless DIY, construction and assembly applications. What makes piano hinges different from many other types is that a single piano hinge tends to run the full length of whichever two surfaces or edges they're hinging - hence the name 'continuous hinge' - as opposed to smaller hinge types, which tend to be installed in multiples and spaced out at intervals along the surface/edge in question.
Piano hinges take their name from one of their most familiar applications, namely securing the heavy lids of upright pianos to the instrument body. A continuous hinge thus allows for a full range of stable opening/closing movement, in whichever direction the lid is designed to be mounted and lifted.
Other common applications of piano hinges include:
- Fire doors
- Security entrances
- Gates and fence openings
- Shed and barn doors
- Hatches, panels and cabinetry
- Chests, crates and tool boxes
