Boost Converters

Boost converters, also known as step-up converters, are DC-to-DC power converter devices used to increase voltage from input to output while simultaneously stepping down current. RS Australia stocks a comprehensive range of boost converter ICs from trusted brands including Maxim Integrated and Texas Instruments, suited to designs powered by batteries, solar panels, rectifiers or DC generators. With integrated semiconductors and energy storage elements built in, these DC boost converter components are widely specified across industrial automation, portable electronics, telecommunications and renewable energy systems.

How Boost Converters Work

A boost converter stores energy in its inductor when the internal switch is closed, then releases that energy into the load at a higher voltage when the switch opens. Because power is conserved (P = VI), the output current is lower than the input current to balance the higher output voltage. Most modern boost converter chips integrate the switching transistor, control logic and feedback network into a single package, with the duty cycle of the internal switch directly controlling the boost ratio.

Boost converter ICs operate in one of two conduction modes. In Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM), the inductor current never reaches zero between switching cycles, which produces lower output ripple, higher efficiency and a more predictable transfer function. CCM is the preferred mode for boost regulator designs running at steady, moderate-to-high load currents.

In Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM), the inductor fully discharges every cycle before the next switch event. This allows smaller, lower-cost inductors but produces higher voltage ripple. DCM is well suited to light-load and wide load-range applications, making it a common choice for step up IC and step-up converter IC designs that must operate efficiently across varying current demands.

Industrial Applications of Boost Converters

Boost converters are deployed wherever a stable voltage step up is required from a lower-voltage DC source. The following are the most common professional applications.

  • LCD, OLED and Haptic Displays: A boost up converter delivers the higher rail voltages required to drive LCD, OLED and haptic display modules in consumer and industrial devices.
  • Portable Electronics: Tablets, mobile phones and barcode scanners use a step up boost converter to maintain stable operating voltages as the battery discharges.
  • LED Lighting Systems: LED strings and automotive lighting use boost converters to provide the constant-current drive needed for consistent brightness across series-connected LEDs.
  • Solar Power and MPPT Controllers: A DC boost stage in MPPT controllers lifts solar panel voltage to the level required for battery charging or grid-tied inversion.
  • Telecommunications Equipment: RF transmitters and base stations use boost converters to derive stable higher voltages for power amplifier and signal chain circuits.
  • Industrial Sensor Systems: Boost regulators supply ADCs and signal conditioning circuits with the precise voltages needed for accurate measurement, even when the input rail varies.
  • Electric Vehicle Subsystems: EV designs step the auxiliary 12V or 48V rail up to the higher voltages required by infotainment, lighting and instrumentation electronics.
  • Wearables and IoT Devices: Wearables and low-power IoT designs use a compact boost stage to lift Li-ion cell voltage to the 3.3V or 5V rail expected by microcontrollers and sensors.
