Rivets are mechanical fasteners that consist of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end and a tail at the opposite end. On the installation, a riveter places a rivet in a pre-drilled hole, and the tail is set or bucked (i.e., deformed) with a rivet gun, rivet tool or pneumatic hammer so that it expands to about 1.5 - 2 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place. They are used to permanently join two steel, aluminium or copper plates usually in mechanical applications where it is imperative that joints do not become loose and cause failure.

### Types of rivets

There are many types of rivets available:

- Blind Rivets also known as drive rivets have a mandrel through their centre that once inserted into pre-drilled holes of the parts they are joining, the blind end expands and the mandrel snaps off. They can be installed from only one side making them ideal for areas where access is limited.
- Tubular Rivets have a shank hole within the shaft of the rivet and are available with different head styles such as the oval, button, flat and countersunk.
- Snap Rivets are supplied pre-assembled and simply push into the required holes providing a fast and neat solution.
- Solid rivets, or the original rivet. These solid fasteners resist water, vibration, tampering, and other severe conditions.
- Threaded insert and rivet nuts which are applied like a classic rivet integrate seamless, strong, and permanent threading in fragile sheet materials

<p>Like all rivets, so-called pop rivets are a type of fastener, most often used wherever you need to create a permanent join between two plates or sheet materials. This is typically seen across a wide range of mechanical and industrial applications, where the priority is long-term stability and rigidity of the joint (such that it can't easily work loose over time, leading to structural failure).</p><p>Rivets can be used in metal, wood, plastics, and a wide range of other materials and surface types. They're particularly well suited to fastening and reinforcing thinner or more delicate (non-load bearing) sheets that often incorporate more fragile joints and seams.</p><p>Our extensive range of pop and blind rivets is supplied by leading brands including the original POP models, as well as Böllhoff, Richco and RS PRO.</p><h2>How do pop rivets differ from other rivet types?</h2><p>Pop rivets are a type of 'blind' rivet - also known as a drive rivet - that are designed to be inserted and set from one side of the sheet or joint. Although the term 'Pop' originated as a trademarked brand name, it has now become a somewhat generic term for this type of blind rivet.</p><p>The fixing action of a pop rivet is made possible thanks to a unique construction involving a pin or mandrel running through the tubular centre, which pulls out and deforms the blind end after insertion and then snaps off cleanly. This deformation process expands the riveted metal on one side of the pre-drilled holes in two or more aligned sheets, preventing removal once the piece has been seated and set.</p><h2>What are pop rivets used for?</h2><p>Depending on the specific demands of the application and environment, pop rivets can be an effective and reliable permanent replacement for a variety of welds, adhesives or bolts.
