The IOT2020 gateway is compatible with most Arduino sketches that can be uploaded directly from the Arduino IDE. Many other programs can be compiled and/or run under Yocto Linux thanks to the  X1000 SOC (X86) controller. Third-party hardware, such as PLCs and sensors from various different brands, can be integrated via Ethernet or Serial (USB adapter needed) by using open or industrial protocols like Modbus, Profinet, REST and MQTT.










The IOT2020 is compatible with Arduino shields and various high level programming languages such as Java, C++ and Python or via a range of IDEs that includes Eclipse and Yocto Linux compilers. It is also expandable thanks to the on-board mPCIe port. Node-Red, MQTT and SQLITE3 can be used to connect and control local and remote peripherals.

What does it mean that SIMATIC IOT2020 is an “Industrial hardware”? What is the difference with the regular development boards such as Arduino?

UL/CE certification is only one of the many requirements that make IOT2020 a suitable hardware for industrial applications. IOT2020 is developed with an industrial IP20 housing that allows a secure installation within machineries and electrical panels and an easy connection with other DIN rail industrial devices such as PLCs, power supplies, relays or inverter drives.

Moreover, IOT2020 is built with industrial grade components for continuous operation in industrial environments with vibrations, dust, high temperatures and electromagnetic interferences.

Regarding communication protocols, IOT2020 can communicate with other industrial hardware by using secure industrial protocols such as Modbus, PROFINET and MQTT.

The typical open source development boards are usually not developed for continuous operation in an industrial environment and are not designed to be easily interfaced with other industrial devices.
